Thoughts on therapy from a Stamford Counsellor

Why Counselling?

In pre-therapy chats I'm often asked whether counselling could help. There's no definitive answer - effective psychotherapy is co-created by the therapist and client, but as a guide, here are some changes you may be able to make...

Increasing self-esteem and becoming more able to live life on your own terms

Moving away from a dark cloud of depression and learning to feel joy again

Reducing levels of anxiety and an increasing your ability to manage stress
Healing or making peace with the wounds of your past
Feeling more supported during a life transition or at a time of grief or loss
Learning how to understand and accept your own sensitivity and vulnerability
Challenging people-pleasing and setting stronger relational boundaries
Relying less on the opinions of others by focusing more on your own values
Challenging perfectionism and procrastination
Understand how patterns developed in childhood impact you and your relationships today

Thoughts on Therapy from a Counsellor in Stamford

Are you nervous about seeing a counsellor?

If you've never seen a counsellor before, it can seem a daunting prospect. So if you think you'd like you'd like to talk, but the thought is somewhat scary, I've written some blogs to try to help you feel more at ease...

Worried About Contacting a Counsellor?
From personal experience I know this can feel unnerving, so I'll help you feel as comfortable as I can
I offer a free 15-20 minute pre-therapy chat, with no obligation or pressure to book after that
I'm a BACP Registered member, so ethically obliged to only work in your best interest
If I feel I can't help, I'll be honest about this and will suggest options for suitable support for you
Apprehensive About Your First Session?
We'll create a safe space for you from the moment we meet
Confidentiality is the foundation of your therapy - what's said between us, stays between us
No commitment from you - at the end of the first session you decide your next steps
We'll focus only on what you want to work on at a pace that is psychologically safe for you

What would counselling be like?

Maybe this would be your first experience of counselling? If so, I get how nervous this could make you feel. So my first priority is to help you feel as safe and comfortable as I can.

My starting point is to see you as a unique individual, with your own history, relationships, worries, hopes and dreams. I'm here to listen to you fully, to really understand how it is for you right now.

You can share anything knowing that I'll remain calm. I'll validate your struggles and I won't tell you what to do or judge you.Exploring your past can lead to lasting change, but you may want to focus on issues you're facing now. Either way, I won't pressure you to talk about anyting you aren't ready for. Your psychological safety is important to me, so we'll always work at a pace that feels right for you.
